Recently one of the tech listservs hosted a VERY active discussion of the bad behavior of organizations and agencies in the hiring process. One of the biggest complaints was of a lack of follow-up or response after interviews.

Have you looked at your recruiting process from the outside? Do your managers enhance your reputation when they are recruiting? Do your processes? Marketing research tells us that unhappy consumers tell far more people than happy ones do. Do you want your reputation to enhance your talent management - or hinder it?

Economy and Fear

Whether we are currently in a recession or entering one or not, many people are worried. What can you do right now?

Communicate with your employees. Let them know what is going on - positive and not so. If you are willing to act on them, ask for suggestions. Remind them that their daily efforts directly impact the organization's success and give some specific examples.

Look for top-quality talent. Now is a great time to enrich your capabilities by hiring the best from your competitors and other sources.

Keep your development programs going. These do not have to be very expensive to enhance your resources. Such programs also attract and retain smart people.

Look at your human resource management practices.

Clear out the underbrush. Keep those which you know are really working. And if you don't know which those are, find out!

Personal Productivity

In the USA, we work longer hours and have less time off than workers in other developed countries. But we are not more productive, we are less.

How can you work smarter?

Block some time each day to do one major task. Multi-tasking is actually harmful to your productivity, studies show. So fully focusing on something allows you to raise your performance level and increase speed.

Regularly assess yourself. What are the most critical things you need to do now? What can you change about how you work that may enhance your achievements. Remember small changes can add up. What can you stop doing? What can you delegate to others?

At conference speeches, I have used a story about a large monthly report I missed once only to discover no one noticed. And at every talk I have had several audience members who tell of some similar time-consuming work they did that turned out to be unnecessary. What's yours?
