And that made my day(week, month,...) and keeps me learning! He validated what I try to do in my work with both those terms. The point behind this small story is that you can have this impact on your staff and improve productivity while doing so. Meaningful praise and recognition are actually rare in the work world. Yet employees of all levels crave these. And research shows that employees who are recognized for their work become more engaged and productive as a result. How can you use this knowledge? First become observant of what your staff is doing to achieve goals and do their jobs. As you see good work results, tell the person. The simplest formula is
Examples: "I know that dealing with that customer's problem was really tough technically and emotionally. I appreciate your hard work to solve the technical problem without turning defensive when the customer got rude." OR "I know I have dumped a lot on you lately and I really appreciate that you have done so much so effectively. It's been critical work and I just wanted to say thanks for helping me." Effective recognition is specific, sincere and timely. And remember, no faking! Insincere comments will cost you big in the long run. Employees recognize them and your reputation suffers fast. As will your results over time. Other recognition tips: Periodically put your comments in writing. Add a thank you to positive comments received from a client or another manager. Recognize a team's good work publicly at your staff meeting. And if you keep notes or a copy of such 'atta-boys', you will find them useful for performance reviews or as input to formal awards programs.
