Human Resources Manager
(Note: This is for a first HR management position)

Prime Function: Provides human resources services and advice to management and employees.

Critical Functions:

  1. Provides HR guidance, advice, and services to all staff.
  2. Develops and maintains employment related records and systems, maintains legal compliance in human resources arena, advises managers on requirements, monitors EEO/AAP compliance, and resolves problems.
  3. Administers employment functions to include: assisting managers in recruiting and hiring; compliance with legal and regulatory guidance; new hire orientation; terminations.
  4. Supports the compensation program to include: monitoring merit pay actions and other pay changes; communicating benefits plans; and advising on pay and benefits issues.
  5. Oversees the performance management process to include: performance appraisal administration; assistance in problem documentation and involuntary terminations.
  6. Assists management in identifying and resolving employee relations issues.
  7. Suggests and implements HR budget and management reporting systems to improve the human resource management of the company. Prepares and files required and ad-hoc reports with federal, state, and local agencies.
  8. Represents the company to prospective employees, customers, the public, other companies, community and professional organizations.

Reports To: President

Knowledge and Experience:
Eight or more years HR experience plus BA/Human Resources or related degree or equivalent experience. Very good working knowledge of HR principles, practices, and laws and detailed knowledge of HR administration. Demonstrated ability to work with a wide range of people and to maintain confidentiality. Very good interpersonal and communications skills with good analytic skills. Word-processing and spreadsheet software experience required and HRIS experience preferred.


Human Resources Director
(Note: A more developed or larger organization's description)

Prime Function: Provides human resources services and advice to management and employees.

Critical Functions:

  1. Provides HR guidance, advice, and services to all staff.
  2. Develops effective organizational design and development strategies and programs to meet business goals. Advises senior management on critical organizational issues and needs. Defines and implements staff development programs including training and development programs, career planning and succession planning.
  3. Administers employment functions to include: assisting managers in planning, sourcing, and hiring of candidates; advising and training managers and interviewers; new hire orientation; EEO compliance.
  4. Manages the compensation program to include: reviewing compensation programs to support business goals, advising managers; monitoring merit pay actions and other pay changes; communicating benefits plans and advising employees on pay and benefits issues. Maintains legal compliance and resolves problems.
  5. Supports the performance management process to include: performance appraisal administration; assistance in counseling, problem resolution and involuntary terminations.
  6. Monitors and supports effective employee relations activities and provides coaching to managers on effective practices. Supports effective communications with training and a full range of internal communications offerings.
  7. Develops and implements Human Resources budget, outsourcing plans, and management reporting systems to improve the human resource management of the company. Ensures required and ad-hoc reports to federal, state, and local agencies are completed.
  8. Represents the company to prospective employees, customers, the public, other companies, community and professional organizations.

Reports To: CEO/President

Knowledge and Experience:
Ten or more years HR experience plus BA/Human Resources or related degree or equivalent experience. Strategic HR experience with advanced degree in human resource management or business administration preferred. Excellent knowledge of HR principles, practices, and laws. Demonstrated ability to work with a wide range of people and to maintain confidentiality. Excellent interpersonal and communications skills with very good analytic skills. Word-processing, spreadsheet, and HRIS software experience required. Five or more years management experience in HR, preferably in a (your environment).
